Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar

Outstanding research

The most significant element of the Rhine-Neckar seat of science, alongside the universities and colleges, are the more than 40 non-university research establishments.

Leading international organisations in their field in Heidelberg, for example, include the German Cancer Research Centre (DKFZ) and the European Laboratory for Molecular Biology (EMBL). The Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim is an internationally acknowledged centre of modern psychiatry.

The four member institutes of the Leibniz Community must also be mentioned here: GESIS – Leibniz Institute of Social Sciences, the Institute of German Language, the Centre for European Economic Research (all in Mannheim) and the German Research Institute of Public Administration in Speyer. The Max Planck Society is also represented by four of its renowned institutes in Heidelberg – Astronomy, Nuclear Physics, Medical Research as well as Foreign Public Law and International Law.
