The demographic change is today already perceptible in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, and its impact will increase considerably over the coming years. This will not only open up new opportunities, but will also pose major challenges for the region. To comprehensively structure demographic change and deal with as many relevant theme areas as possible in an integrated manner, the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region has set up the "Regional Strategy for Demographic Change" (RDW).
Since 2007, efforts have been successfully made to:
- exploit the opportunities for demographic change in the MRN,
- enable joint coordinated action in the region,
- support local authority districts as well as small and medium-sized companies in coping with the challenges,
- create transparency,
- and consolidate the networking of protagonists and activities in the MRN.
Structure of the Demographic Change regional strategy
The body in charge of dealing with regional strategy is the "Demographic Change Steering Committee". Here is where the main protagonists and networks involved in organising demographic change in the region discuss concrete issues and agree on joint courses of action. In doing so, they fundamentally orient their decisions to the overall strategy adopted on November 19, 2009. This strategy, formulated on the advice of scientific experts, lays down the structure of the cross-sectional theme of demographic change taking into account the seven basic principles of existence, namely employment and economic activities, education, recreation, community life, transport and mobility, provision of services and accommodation. A theme coordinator is appointed for each of these spheres of activity who ensures that an overview is kept of current developments and acts as a point of contact in his or her field. The actual products and projects are developed in the networks and working groups connected with the regional strategy. These are the "Vibrant Employment Market" network, the "Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region Network for Operational Health Management", the Rhine-Neckar regional group of the "Demographic Network" (ddn), the "Accommodation" working group, the Rhine-Neckar Regional Park networks and the working group of municipal demographic representatives.
