Start-ups

The Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region (MRN) is aspiring to become one of the most competitive regions in Europe by 2015. A prerequisite for achieving this goal is new and sustained growth. Start-ups create growth and employment. The "Start-up" working area in the MRN pools the information available in the region to consolidate its start-up culture. MRN GmbH offers a comprehensive overview of the start-up dynamics in the region, creates transparency and gives an all-round picture of the start-up scene in the MRN. Organisation of the annual Start-up Day, the establishment of specific networks (for instance institutes of further education, business angels) and the publication of collated information (e.g. business registration statistics) belong to the most important activities of MRN GmbH in co-operation with numerous partners such as the chambers of industry and commerce.

  • Business registrations

Anybody who accompanies start-ups and fledgling companies along the road to self-employment requires an analysis of the economic environment. A lack of information and knowledge is frequently the reason for errors of business judgement that lead to companies making the wrong decisions. That is why it is crucial to supply advisory bodies, chambers of industry and commerce, locally active economic sponsors, regional cluster initiatives, as well as protagonists from the finance sector, with the necessary data and facts. The compilation of business registrations provided here gives an overview of the start-up dynamics in the region, creates transparency, and gives an all-round picture of the start-up scene in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region.

  • Start-ups from the colleges in the metropolitan region

The Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region is a leader among German conurbations where academic qualification opportunities are concerned. Nevertheless, is still relatively seldom for outstanding research results and innovative start-up ideas to be transformed into economically interesting projects. The new MRN university network "Start-ups from colleges" aims to activate existing start-up potential at institutes of higher education, create a positive start-up climate and give a better start to young entrepreneurs. The working group wants to contribute to making sure that start-ups quickly obtain the right information and contacts for their own ideas.

The first joint product of the network is the brochure "From college to working for yourself". This provides guidance and urges the reader to make use of the numerous offers of information and support available in the region.

  • Forms of financing for innovative start-ups

In the early phases, innovative company start-ups seldom receive capital from established finance sources. Venture capital companies are also withdrawing more and more from the early stages and seed financing projects. Business angels are consequently playing an increasingly crucial role as an alternative source of financing for fledgling innovative companies. As private investors, not only do they inject their own capital into the companies, but most of them also support the start-ups with their in-depth knowledge of the industry and widespread networks. Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar GmbH is a co-operation partner involved in setting up a Rhine-Neckar business angel network.
