Information technology (or IT) has permanently transformed many areas of life over recent decades, but the greatest impact has been felt by science and the economy. Due to its significance today to industry, business, telecommunications and the media, it is one of "lubricants" of the modern economy. On the one hand, the usage of IT in practically every corporate sector is a crucial success factor. On the other hand, the IT industry itself meanwhile makes a huge contribution to the national economy.
The Gesellschaft für Informatik Rhein-Neckar (Rhine-Neckar Society of Information Science), IT-Forum Rhein-Neckar and the VDE Kurpfalz (Electoral-Palatinate Association of German Electricians) joined together to form the "Rhine-Neckar IT & Media Network" under the umbrella of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, marking the establishment of an innovative branch network in one of the most dynamic sectors of industry.
Taking into account the focal orientation on the application and maximised utilisation of information and communication technologies, the network essentially pursues two overriding strategic aims:
- Positioning and profiling of the region in the IT and media sector
- Support for the economy, employment, education, training and technology
